In many facilities, compressed air systems are the least energy efficient of all equipment. In today's typical compressed air system, from 80% up to 90% of the energy to produce and to distribute compressed air, is typically lost.

 

On the other hand, after primary workcycle of end use, big portion of compressed air is released to the ambient air without real reason - "it has been always done like that." However that remaining compressed air has still a lot of energy.

Typically, only 10-15% of the original energy used to produce compressed air is actually converted into useful work by the compressed air end use application.

On the other hand, after primary work cycle of end use, big portion of compressed air is released to the ambient air without real reason - "it has been always done like that." However that remaining compressed air has still lot of energy that could be recycled.

According to the studies conducted by i.e. Natural Recources of Canada and US Department of Energy, very typical small size industrial air compressor (~75kW) needs approximately 23 000 euros worth of electrity in a year in three shift use (~65% load).

In a picture is shown a part of logistics process where the products are ready for dispatch to the customers and moved forward according to customer orders. The product trolleys are moved with pneumatic cylinders with 800mm stroke. With bf+ energy saving unit, the need of compressed air is 50% less than without it.
